Buying a Chinese Vehicle in the UAE: 12 Checks Before You Sign
The quotation is only the beginning. Verify specification, warranty responsibility, software, charging and parts in writing.

1. Confirm who sold the car\u2014and who supports it
An official distributor, independent importer and private reseller can offer very different ownership experiences even when the vehicle looks identical. Obtain the seller\u2019s legal name, trade-licence details, service location and warranty provider. The words \u201Cdealer warranty\u201D are not the same as a manufacturer-backed regional warranty.
2. Decode the exact specification
Use the VIN, build label and equipment list to confirm model year, battery, motor layout, airbags, driver-assistance hardware and charging port. Chinese domestic-market trims can differ from export trims. Do not rely on an online configurator for another country.
3. Put the warranty in writing
Ask for the full document before paying. Check years and kilometre limits for the vehicle, traction battery, motors, electronics, air suspension and infotainment. Read exclusions, required service intervals, transfer rules and the battery-health threshold that triggers a claim.
4. Verify registration and insurance before the deposit becomes non-refundable
The vehicle must be registrable in your emirate and acceptable to an insurer on terms you understand. Send the VIN and model details to the relevant authority, testing centre and insurer when the car is an unusual parallel import. A showroom assurance is not a policy quotation.
5. Check the charging hardware
Identify the physical AC and DC connectors, maximum rates, supplied cable and whether local public chargers are compatible. A China-market GB/T port may require a different infrastructure plan from an export CCS2 vehicle. Test an actual session where possible.
6. Test the software away from showroom Wi-Fi
Pair your phone, create the owner account, run navigation, try voice control and confirm remote app functions over the mobile network. Check map coverage, English or Arabic interfaces, smartphone integration, streaming services and whether a mainland phone number is required.
7. Ask how updates are delivered
Confirm that the vehicle receives official regional over-the-air updates. Ask who handles a failed update and whether unofficial language conversion or firmware changes affect warranty and safety systems.
8. Inspect cooling and climate performance
Run the air-conditioning after the car has stood in the sun. Check front and rear vent output, battery thermal warnings and whether repeated fast charging is supported in high ambient temperatures. Large glass roofs need effective heat rejection and a practical shade solution.
9. Price body and electronic parts
Request prices and lead times for a headlamp, windscreen, bumper, camera, radar unit, wheel and common suspension component. A modest collision can immobilise a technology-heavy vehicle if calibration equipment or parts are unavailable.
10. Visit the workshop
Look beyond the sales lounge. Ask how many high-voltage technicians are trained, whether diagnostic access is official, how battery faults are handled and whether the workshop can calibrate cameras, radar, air suspension and steering systems.
11. Research resale and finance
Ask banks and leasing companies whether they finance the exact model. Review used listings, not only new-car promotions. A large discount can be sensible, but understand what it signals about residual value and market confidence.
12. Perform a complete delivery inspection
Check paint, glass dates, tyre dates, charging cables, keys, emergency equipment, software version, odometer and every powered feature. Photograph the car and record unresolved items on the delivery note.
The disciplined purchase
A compelling Chinese vehicle can be an excellent UAE purchase when the support chain is equally compelling. The checklist is not designed to discourage buyers; it turns a feature-rich decision into a documented one. Verify first, then enjoy the technology.
