Beyond Horsepower: The Chassis Technology Behind China\u2019s Most Ambitious Vehicles
Four motors, rear-wheel steering and active suspension matter only when software turns them into predictable vehicle behaviour.

Performance is now a control problem
Electric motors deliver torque quickly, but straight-line acceleration is the easiest part of vehicle dynamics. The more important challenge is deciding how much force each tyre should produce, how the body should move and how the controls should communicate with the driver. Chinese flagships increasingly approach the chassis as a coordinated digital system.
Sensors estimate wheel speed, steering angle, yaw, acceleration and body movement. Controllers then adjust motor torque, dampers, air springs, brakes and rear steering in milliseconds. The result can be both more capable and more consistent\u2014when the calibration is good.
Four motors and wheel-level authority
BYD\u2019s Yangwang U8 uses the e4 platform with an electric motor at each wheel. BYD says the system produces more than 1,200 horsepower and supports functions such as a tank turn and stability control after a tyre blowout. Independent motors can add or remove torque at individual wheels far faster than a conventional mechanical differential.
The dramatic demonstrations attract attention, but the everyday benefit is subtler: traction management on mixed surfaces, stable acceleration and precise yaw control. The system must still respect tyre grip. Electronics can allocate force; they cannot create friction that is not there.
Rear-wheel steering shrinks a large car
At low speed, rear wheels can turn opposite the fronts to reduce the turning circle. At higher speeds, they can turn in the same direction to improve lane-change stability. On long flagship SUVs and MPVs, this can make parking less intimidating without sacrificing motorway composure.
The steering should feel progressive rather than artificial. During a test drive, try a tight U-turn, a roundabout and a fast lane change. Watch whether the rear of the car follows naturally or creates an unfamiliar sensation.
Active suspension separates events
Conventional suspension must compromise between body control and bump absorption. Electronically controlled dampers, air springs and hydraulic systems can adapt more quickly. NIO\u2019s SkyRide system and advanced systems offered by Li Auto and Zeekr aim to control pitch under braking, roll in corners and ride height while preserving comfort.
No system can erase road texture completely. Heavy wheels and tyres still matter, and aggressive low-speed control can feel busy. Judge the vehicle on broken urban roads as well as smooth demonstration routes.
Steer-by-wire raises the stakes
Steer-by-wire removes or reduces the traditional mechanical relationship between the steering wheel and road wheels, replacing it with sensors, motors and redundant electronics. It can enable variable ratios and packaging freedom. It also demands exceptionally robust fail-safe design and careful feedback calibration.
Buyers do not need to fear the technology, but they should avoid treating it as a novelty. Look for clear regulatory approval, redundancy, manufacturer detail and independent road testing.
Integration beats specification count
A car can have air suspension, rear steering and multiple motors yet feel disjointed if each subsystem reacts independently. The best vehicles coordinate them so the driver receives one consistent response. Braking should blend regeneration and friction smoothly; steering weight should build logically; body control should not become harsh.
That is why a long test drive remains essential. Chassis technology is most impressive when you stop noticing the individual features and simply trust the vehicle.
