Chinese Water-Wading SUVs: What the Claims Really Mean

A practical comparison of the Yangwang U8, Jetour G700 and GWM Tank 500—separating published wading claims from real-world risk.

Water capability is not a permission slip

Water-wading claims can be useful when they describe the exact vehicle, market and operating conditions. They become misleading when a headline figure is treated as an invitation to cross flooded roads. The Yangwang U8, Jetour G700 and GWM Tank 500 make three very different claims. This guide explains what each one means for a buyer.

ChinaCarMart has not water-tested these vehicles. Published depths are manufacturer claims, not safe-route recommendations. Moving water, hidden obstacles and damaged road surfaces can turn a shallow crossing into a dangerous one. If depth or conditions are uncertain, take another route.

Compare the claims on the same basis

Vehicle Published claim What to verify
Yangwang U8 Off-road Master Up to 1.4 m with its standard snorkel Edition, equipment and post-exposure procedure
Jetour G700 970 mm in Mexico launch material Export configuration and manual
GWM Tank 500 800 mm in cited V6 and HEV specifications Powertrain, model year and market

Yangwang U8: flotation and wading are separate features

The U8 is unusual because BYD describes an emergency flotation function as well as edition-specific wading capability. Its four-motor platform and sealing measures support a controlled emergency response under prescribed conditions. That is not recreational boating capability, and it should not be confused with normal water-wading clearance.

The Off-road Master brochure quotes up to 1.4 metres with the standard snorkel. Ask the supplier for the VIN-specific manual, the relevant operating mode and the inspection requirements after exposure to water. Emergency equipment is a reason to understand the vehicle carefully, not a reason to reduce caution.

Jetour G700: a serious claim that needs a precise specification

Jetour positions the G700 as a premium hybrid off-road SUV with family space and sophisticated hardware. Its Mexico launch material quotes a maximum wading depth of 970 mm for the described configuration. Treat that figure as a starting point for verification, not a transferable fact for every export vehicle.

For buyers considering the G700, the meaningful checks are low-speed control, visibility, underbody protection and local support. Request the relevant manual page and confirm the permitted depth, any required vehicle setting and the prescribed post-wading service procedure before ordering.

GWM Tank 500: the conventional benchmark

The Tank 500 offers a useful comparison because its claim is more conventional. GWM Mexico quotes up to 800 mm for a 3.0-litre V6 version, while the Thailand HEV specification also lists 800 mm. Neither source establishes the limit for every powertrain or future model year.

Its value is a clear, published reference point for a large SUV. The broader ownership decision still includes tyres, recovery equipment, service access and confidence in the car's condition—not a single brochure number.

What to request before buying

  • The manual page for the exact vehicle and market.
  • Written confirmation of the stated limit and any required drive mode or ride height.
  • The prescribed inspection procedure after water exposure.
  • Warranty and insurance treatment of water damage.
  • For used cars, an inspection for corrosion, prior water exposure and electronic faults.

A supplier who cannot identify the applicable specification should not be asking you to treat water capability as a reason to buy.

The buyer verdict

Choose the U8 for its distinctive engineering only if you understand the exact edition and support requirements. Consider the G700 if you want family space with ambitious off-road hardware and can verify the supplied version. Include the Tank 500 when a conventional, published wading specification and an established SUV format suit your needs. In every case, a published claim is a reference point—not a route plan.
